Study Grant Application Project 2015

A limited number of grants of up to $750 will be available to students wishing to obtain study credit for travel to Turkey to participate in commemoration events planned in Istanbul in April 2015, Project 2015 said today. The group, a US-based organization, is working to ensure that a large contingent of Armenians come to Turkey for the historic centennial commemoration.

“Students wishing to travel and obtain academic credit for participating in the commemoration events in Istanbul will now have the opportunity to do so with the limited travel grants we are making available,” said Heghnar Watenpaugh, Project 2015 board member and professor at UC Davis. “University students committed to the study of genocide and human rights are the future citizen leaders of their communities, so we want to facilitate their participation in the commemoration in Istanbul.”

Each university will have a different set of requirements, syllabi, and assignments for the accredited and supervised reading course. For instance, UCLA participating students will be provided an advance set of readings and expected to have read most of them by the time they arrive in Turkey. In addition, participants are expected to participate actively at each of the commemoration-related events in Istanbul, including: a commemoration concert on April 22; the April 24 events at various locations in the city, culminating with the commemoration at Taksim Square; and an academic conference on April 26 and 27 at Bilgi University with co-sponsorship by UCLA’s Richard Hovannisian Endowed Chair in Modern Armenian History between April 22 and April 27. Each participant is highly encouraged to keep a reflective diary during his or her stay in Istanbul. To receive credit for their supervised reading course, participants are expected to submit a written assignment after their return from Istanbul.

If you are a student at any of the universities where Project 2015 board members are professors, please contact the relevant professor for further information so they can help you apply for independent study credits at one of these institutions.

To pursue academic credit at another university, you should identify the rules for independent study credit at your institution and a faculty member willing to serve as a supervisor; and prepare a syllabus and study plan for the project, a sample of which is available on the website.

To apply for a study grant from Project 2015, please submit an application to armenianproject2015@gmail.com by March 1, 2015. Due to limited funds, students will be selected on the basis of their application, including a statement of purpose no longer than two pages.
